SEO versus Google Ads / A practical guide

SEO or Google Ads: which comes first?

Start with your business constraint. A clear offer, a useful landing page and a team ready to answer enquiries matter to both channels. Once those foundations work, the choice depends on timing, budget, search demand and what you can measure.

Understand what each channel buys you

Google Ads and PPC can place an offer in front of relevant searchers when the campaign is eligible, has budget and competes successfully in the auction. SEO improves the pages and foundations that can earn organic visibility over time. Neither guarantees a useful enquiry.

Paid search involves media spend as well as campaign work. Organic listings do not charge per click, but research, development, content and maintenance still cost time and money. Compare the full effort and the business opportunity, rather than describing one channel as fast and the other as free.

Choose a first action that fits the situation

The following are starting questions, not a universal channel prescription. Before spending more, check the destination and your capacity to act on the enquiries it creates.

A time-sensitive offer or launchConsider a tightly scoped Google Ads campaign.Landing-page clarity, search demand, margins, budget and conversion measurement.

When Ads may be the first step

You have a clear offer, a suitable page and enough budget to learn from a defined campaign. Your team can respond promptly and make changes when search terms or lead quality show a mismatch. Estimate the commercial limits using your own margins and sales process before choosing a spend level.

A focused landing page may be needed first. Agree what the campaign should achieve and how wasted searches will be reviewed. An enquiry click, a completed form and a qualified opportunity are different events; avoid treating them as interchangeable conversions.

When SEO may be the first step

Your existing service or category pages fail to explain what you sell, important pages are missing, or technical issues prevent useful content being found. The business can invest in improvements and allow time for search engines to process them. Begin close to a buying decision, with the pages that should help customers choose.

A sensible programme has implementation capacity behind it. There is little value in funding recommendations that nobody can publish. Our SEO cost guide explains the scope questions to ask when comparing an audit, a project and continuing support.

Use both when their roles are clear

Paid search can surface buyer questions and help test an offer. SEO can improve useful service and category content around relevant demand. Share the learning, but choose the best destination for each intent rather than creating two nearly identical pages for every keyword.

If the real issue is friction after the visit, investigate conversion rate optimisation before increasing either source. If the loss happens after a form arrives, our lead generation approach connects capture with qualification and follow-up.

Compare outcomes using the same definition

For Ads, examine spend, search terms and qualified enquiries. For SEO, examine page and query visibility, useful visits and qualified enquiries where measurement allows. Use the same qualification rule across both, and separate open opportunities from won business.

Attribution across visits and devices is incomplete. Organic query reports are aggregate data, so they cannot reliably reveal every individual lead’s exact search. Record what is known and discuss the gaps. Talk through your brief to choose the first action around your actual numbers and capacity.

Before you begin

A few useful answers.

01Is SEO free once a page is published?

There is no charge for each organic click, but keeping content useful, maintaining the website and measuring its performance still takes resources. Treat SEO as ongoing work with a scope, not a free source of guaranteed traffic.

02Can buying Google Ads improve organic rankings?

Buying ads does not purchase an organic position. Google separates advertising from organic search results. The channels can share useful research and better landing pages, while their results should still be reported separately.

03Should a new business always start with Ads?

No. A campaign needs a credible offer, a usable destination, budget and follow-up capacity. If those are missing, making them work may be the more useful first investment.
